Moving abroad 2 candidate story

Candidate’s story: Janette’s first steps into life abroad

Janette had always been curious about life outside Finland, but she had not travelled much before. When she discovered the option to work abroad through Job Squad, she decided to take a chance while she was still young. What started as a small step quickly became one of the best decisions she ever made.

She shares her experience:

“I have worked abroad twice through Job Squad. First in Greece, where I had a remote job, and later in Cyprus where I worked in an online casino office as customer service. I needed a change in my life, something completely new. That was the reason I decided to go abroad. Looking back now, those experiences turned out to be the best in my life. I truly recommend it to everyone. The application was easy and the process moved forward quickly.”

The culture shock that became a lesson

Janette remembers her first move very clearly.

“Since I had not travelled much before Greece, arriving there was a real culture shock. There was so much to adapt to. But the biggest surprise was how kind the people were. Greeks are incredibly friendly and always ready to help. Even if they do not speak English, they still try their best to assist you. I loved that.”

She laughs when she talks about the practical differences she had to learn.

“In every restaurant or café you pay only after you finish your food or drinks. In Finland you usually pay first when ordering, so this was new to me. And one funny thing… I couldn’t put toilet paper in the toilet. I had to throw it in a bin next to it. It felt strange at first, but after a while it became normal. I also noticed how much respect Greeks have for stray animals and for each other. That really stayed with me.”

Cyprus: new job, new responsibilities

After Greece, Cyprus felt familiar but still full of its own surprises.

“In Cyprus I was shocked by the amount of cats on the island. People said there are more cats than people. The culture felt very similar to Greece, so there was not as much to adapt to, and people there speak more English which I liked.”

Professionally, Cyprus became a turning point.

“I started as a customer service agent, but quite quickly I had the chance to grow into a customer manager role. I enjoyed the responsibilities and my tasks so much. It taught me a lot and made me more confident.”

A journey she would recommend to anyone

Today, Janette looks back with gratitude.

“Moving abroad changed my life. I learned about new cultures, made friends from different backgrounds and gained professional experience that I would not have had in Finland. I am really happy I took the chance.”
